M6 in Cheshire reopens after fatal crash

The M6 in Cheshire has been reopened after a crash in which a lorry driver died, leading to its closure for almost 11 hours.

The southbound carriageway was shut between junction 18 (Holmes Chapel) and junction 16 (Barthomley) at about 17:30 GMT on Monday.

Two lorries had collided, causing one to jack-knife and block three lanes of the southbound carriageway.

Two lanes of northbound carriageway were closed for the rescue operation.

In a second incident, a car and van collided.

The driver who was killed was cut free from his cab but died shortly afterwards.

He was driving a foreign-registered vehicle and a police spokeswoman said inquiries are continuing in an attempt to identify him and locate his next of kin. Nobody else was injured.
