The wife of a man who died after being robbed and assaulted outside a shop has described him as "warm-hearted, compassionate and affectionate".

Delivery driver Ali Jawaid, 43, from Birmingham, was hit over the head with a metal bar near a mobile phone shop in Coventry on 9 November.

His wife, Maryam Jawaid, from Ward End, said their six-year-old son and four-year-old daughter had asked about him.

Two men aged 25 who were arrested have been bailed pending further inquiries.

Mr Jawaid died on Tuesday. The arrested men were from the Bell Green and Stoke areas of Coventry.

Mrs Jawaid said: "Our six-year-old son keeps asking for his daddy… he is waking in the night crying asking when he will be back.

"Our four-year-old daughter is just confused, asking where he is, but is really too young to understand how he's been cruelly taken from her. As a family we are all doing our best to comfort them.

"Ali was brutally attacked by criminals who wanted to take away his livelihood - his life was taken all due to the greed of people who wanted to steal a few mobile phones.

"He worked hard to provide for his family and always succeeded in bringing joy to all of us; he was someone you could rely on and who would go out of his way to help others."

Mrs Jawaid encouraged anyone with information about the attack in Sewell Highway to contact the police.

Det Ch Insp Matt Markham, from West Midlands Police, said: "If you saw the attack, suspect who was responsible or have even just been offered a mobile phone for sale… you could have important information, so please contact us."
