Atherton swingers' club opposed by residents

More than 1,000 people have signed a petition against the opening of a swingers' club in Greater Manchester.

Wigan Council has approved a planning application for Fever Private Members Club by Sale-based Haybak Limited on Market Street, Atherton.

The authority said the application went through all the proper national planning guidelines and was scrutinised thoroughly and appropriately.

Resident Francis Raftery said the issue is disruption, not the club's morality.

Ms Raferty, who organised a protest outside the club earlier this month, said: "It is the siting of the club we have a problem with - not what goes on in it.

"Atherton is the wrong place to have it. There is only one main street in Atherton and this would be right under our noses.

"The plan is this going to be opened [seven nights a week], some nights until 4am, and we are concerned with the car parking, the noise and the comings and goings during the night."

Wigan Council said there has been no application for an alcohol licence for the club.

No-one at Haybak has been available for comment.
