More than 50 firefighters are tackling a large blaze at a five-storey building in Stockport town centre.

The fire broke out at the building, which is a block of flats under construction, on Lower Hillgate at about 02:20 BST.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said houses surrounding the site have been evacuated as a precaution.

Ten fire engines and three overhead jets are at the scene.

A large part of the town centre has been cordoned off and Lower Hillgate is closed in both directions between Market Place and the junction of Waterloo Road and Edward Street.

Police are at the scene directing traffic.
