A man has suffered "very serious, life changing injuries" after falling from a viaduct in Manchester.

Police said the 40-year-old fell from the structure near Cornbrook Metrolink Station after running away from staff early on Wednesday morning.

He was taken to hospital, where he was described as being in "a serious but stable condition".

Staff were investigating reports of cable theft on the viaduct when the incident happened.

A spokesman for Metrolink said fibre optic cables with minimal scrap value had been badly damaged, affecting PA systems, signals and substation controls.

Ch Insp Arif Nawaz said "a considerable amount of damage" had been done to the line.

The incident caused severe disruption to Metrolink services from Manchester city centre to Eccles and Altrincham, with no trams running on either line until 09:30 BST.

Trackside is a dangerous environment for anyone other than properly trained professionals”

Engineers have worked to remedy the problems and tram services have since resumed.

Metrolink director Philip Purdy said it had been "an incredibly frustrating episode and we will be working closely with police to hold the individuals responsible to account".

"I'm really sorry to any of our passengers affected by this today and I'd like to thank them for their patience while we dealt with it," he said.

"I know it must have been a very frustrating start to the day for them."

He added that the people who try to steal cable from the network "have no thought for others - or indeed their own personal safety".

"Trackside is a dangerous environment for anyone other than properly trained professionals."

Mr Nawaz said that "regardless of whether or not the injured man was involved in the theft of cable, he has suffered very serious, life changing injuries".
