Diamond Jubilee: Wandsworth has most street parties planned in London

Residents in Wandsworth are set to have the most Diamond Jubilee weekend street parties in London.

Research by BBC London shows the council in south-west London has allowed 164 road closures for celebrations on the extended bank holiday weekend.

Throughout the capital a total of 1,768 road closures have been granted by councils.

Barking and Dagenham, with five, has the fewest closures approved.

The snapshot survey was conducted on 3 May - exactly one month before the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant takes place.

Councils were asked for the number of road closures they have given permission for on 2, 3, 4 and 5 June.

Wandsworth Council said waiving its normal £50 road closure fee had helped contribute to the high number of street parties.

A spokesman said there was a feeling of "rising jubilee fever".

Residents in Wandsworth are already planning double the number of street parties that were held to celebrate last year's royal wedding. On that occasion, local people hosted 67 parties - which was the second highest in London.

Each borough sets its own deadline for applications for jubilee street parties. Many, such as Lewisham, are still accepting requests.

Richmond follows closely behind its neighbour Wandsworth, with 163 roads being closed. Sutton has given permission for 110, Hillingdon 102 and Croydon 86.

Barking and Dagenham Council said its number was low because it had encouraged residents to organise parties in places where council authorisation was not needed.
