A man who was charged after a swimmer interrupted the University Boat Race in the River Thames has appeared in court.

Trenton Oldfield, 35, of Whitechapel, east London, appeared at Feltham Magistrates' Court charged under the Public Order Act.

The race was stopped on 7 April when the Oxford and Cambridge boats were side by side near Chiswick Eyot.

The race was halted for more than half-an-hour after a man was seen in the path of the boats and their oars.

Cambridge went on to win after Oxford broke an oar.

Mr Oldfield is due to appear at Isleworth Crown Court on 28 May.
