Swansea hold contract talks with Darren Pratley

Swansea are to hold new contract talks with Darren Pratley, 25, whose current deal expires after the 2010-11 season.

Chairman Huw Jenkins also refuted fresh reports linking Nottingham Forest with a £1m bid for the player and said the Swans will try to hold on to him.

He said: "We will deal with things the right way for our football club.

"I can assure supporters that nobody will leave this club unless the deal is right for us and every other option has been exhausted."

Swansea's Championship rivals Forest had a £1.5m bid rejected in January but have been heavily linked with a new improved bid in recent days.

That has intensified since James Perch left the City Ground for newly promoted Premier League side Newcastle United.

But Jenkins says the arrival of new manager Brendan Rodgers allows the club to enter fresh talks with Pratley, one of a number of players linked with moves away from Liberty Stadium during the last 12 months.

"Now that our new manager (Brendan Rodgers) is in place, we will be looking to start discussions with Darren Pratley over a new contract,'' Jenkins told the Swans' website.

"I had a private conversation with Nottingham Forest a few weeks ago which, as we agreed, will stay private.

"I assume that today's story is an attempt by agents to put pressure on us. It's certainly not a new story, so I'm very disappointed.

"But I can state quite categorically that we will not be pressurised or bullied by anyone.

"We will deal with things the right way for our football club. I can assure supporters that nobody will leave this club unless the deal is right for us and every other option has been exhausted.''

Pratley made his first pre-season appearance in Saturday's 1-0 win at Yeovil following his recovery from a stomach bug.

London-born Pratley was Swansea's top scorer last season with seven goals and has made 158 league and cup appearances since arriving from Fulham for £100,000 in June 2006.

Losing Pratley would be a blow for the Swans who have already seen another key midfielder leave this summer.

Leon Britton quit the Liberty Stadium on a free transfer to Sheffield United after a seven-year stay in south Wales.

But the difference with Pratley is that, unlike Britton, he is still under contract and the Swans do not need to sell players.

Jenkins has demonstrated this in the past by holding on to midfielder Ferrie Bodde last summer, rejecting bids of up to £5m from Wigan Athletic.

Rodgers succeeded new Leicester boss Paulo Sousa on Friday and took charge of the Swans on Monday.
