Woman in court over grandmother's death in Glasgow flat

A woman has appeared in court charged with murdering a 63-year-old grandmother in Glasgow.

Amanda Nicoll, 28, is accused of forcing her way into Hannah Smith's flat in Soutra Place, Cranhill, on Christmas Day last year and killing her.

She is also charged with theft and trying to defeat the ends of justice.

During a preliminary hearing at the High Court in Glasgow, her QC entered not guilty pleas on her behalf.

It is alleged that Ms Nicoll forced her way into Mrs Smith's property and stabbed her on the head and body before stamping on her.

Knife claim

She is accused of stealing cigarettes, a set of keys, cash and a knife from her alleged victim.

Ms Nicoll also faces an accusation of attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

It is claimed she hid a knife and a set of keys within the city's Cranhill Park.

She is also said to have told detectives days later that two men were responsible for the murder.

Her QC, Brian McConnachie, asked for a further preliminary hearing as defence inquiries continue.

Judge Lord Turnbull agreed to the request and adjourned the case until next month.
