A train has derailed in Scotland leaving it "precariously balanced" over an embankment and injuring eight passengers.

Following the incident, the Glasgow to Oban train is said to have caught fire, although some 60 passengers were evacuated safely beforehand.

Strathclyde police and British Transport police said one person had been taken to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow with minor spinal injuries; three people have been taken to the Lorn and Islands District General Hospital including one for minor spinal injuries and four people have been taken to the Mid-Argyll Hospital in Lochgilphead.

The remaining passengers have been transported by means of alternative transport to Oban. None of their injuries are thought to be life-threatening.

British Transport police said it believed the incident - which took place near to the Falls of Cruachan station in Argyll and Bute - was due to the train striking several large boulders on the track as the result of a landslide.

ScotRail said train services between Oban and Crianlarich are being disrupted due to the derailed train.
