Baby abandoned in Cwmcarn can be laid to rest
Published: 13th May 2010 14:33:07
A baby boy can now be laid to rest two months after his body was found abandoned at the back of a shop.
An inquest has heard how the baby was wrapped in a towel inside a carrier bag then placed on a gatepost at Cwmcarn in Caerphilly county.
A woman was previously arrested on suspicion of concealment of a birth and bailed pending inquiries.
Coroner David Bowen adjourned the inquest in Newport and formally released the baby's body for a funeral.
Officers named the boy "Patrick" because they believe he was born on St Patrick's Day, 17 March.
Coroner's officer Howard Salmon told the inquest: "A post-mortem examination carried out by a Home Office pathologist proved inconclusive.
"Further tests have been undertaken and investigations by Gwent Police continue."
The baby was found at 1810 GMT on 18 March at least five hours after he was abandoned outside a Spar store.
A teenager made the discovery and called 999 but the infant was dead when he arrived at hospital.
Villagers left teddy bears and flowers on the shop's doorstep.
