Bomb disposal experts are planning to destroy a suspected World War II shell which was found on a beach in Fife.

A member of the public discovered the object on the sands at Tentsmuir at about 14:00 on Wednesday.

The Royal Navy explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team from Faslane was called to the scene, along with the St Andrews coastguard team.

The team had planned to detonate it after the tide receded, however were unable to do so due to poor weather.

Forth Coastguard said a 50-metre cordon was initially set up around the suspected shell, which was found near Shanwell Farm near Tayport.

After the tide receded the EOD team took it to a point on the beach above the high water mark.

A 400-metre cordon was set up, but the experts were not able to detonate the object because the weather became foggy.

A coastguard team remained there overnight and the shell is due to be detonated on Thursday.
