A garden dedicated to former Newcastle and England manager Sir Bobby Robson has been officially opened.

The memorial garden was created on Gallowgate, in Newcastle, close to St James' Park.

Among those who joined County Durham-born Sir Bobby's family at the opening were Newcastle manager Alan Pardew as well as football fans.

The garden includes a series of stones featuring images to celebrate his career.

They include football images and those from his work setting up the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.

The foundation was set up in 2008 and works with scientists at Newcastle University to help develop cancer treatments. In April it was announced it had raised more than £3m.

Sir Bobby died in July 2009 aged 76 after a long battle with cancer.

It is hoped the garden will provide a peaceful area close to the city centre.

North East born sculptor and Newcastle fan Graeme Mitcheson was commissioned to develop an original idea by the council's landscape architect Richard Barnes.

Newcastle City Council worked with NE1 on the project to clear the site.
