About 11,000 women have turned out in Glasgow to compete in Britain's biggest all-women 10K race.

The Ignis Asset Management race saw participants make their way round the southside of the city, into Pollok Park, and finally to Bellahouston Park.

Organisers Glasgow Life said runners had raised more than £1m for charity.

Kenyan Linet Masai defended her title in a time of 32 mins 11 secs, while Lorna Young was the first Scot to finish - completing in 35 mins 24 secs.

Chris Samuel, chief executive of Ignis Asset Management, said: "Ignis has sponsored the 10K for the last 15 years and during that period we've seen a tremendous increase in the number of participants and the money raised for charity.

"The race has also built a fantastic reputation as a first class women's event, occupying an important place in the Scottish sporting calendar."

'Unique event'

Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor George Redmond, said spectators had created a "tremendous atmosphere".

He added: "Millions have been raised for so many deserving charities over the years and this year has been absolutely no exception.

"It all adds up to a unique event that the city is rightly proud of."

Glasgow Lord Provost Councillor Robert Winter said: "It is great to see so many people taking up the challenge of the women's 10K.

"Mass participation events like this provide the ideal motivation for people to get involved, making sport an integral part of their lifestyle."

A full list of all runners, with their race position and finish time, will be published on www.runglasgow.org.
