Condolence book to open for Lord Morris of Manchester

A book of condolence in memory of Lord Morris of Manchester will be opened later in the city.

Lord Morris, who died on 12 August, was a MP in the city for 33 years and was the driving force behind the UK's first disability rights legislation.

In 1997 he was made a life peer in recognition of his work.

Lord Mayor Elaine Boyes said she wanted to "urge everyone in Manchester to sign the book of condolence for Lord Morris".

The peer was MP for Wythenshawe from 1964 to 1997, during which time he successfully campaigned for the introduction of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Act in 1970.

Following the act's introduction, he became the first Minister for the Disabled in 1974.

Ms Boyes said he had "dedicated his life to public service and battled indefatigably for the rights of disabled people".

"Lord Morris made a very real difference to people's lives and it is only right we pay tribute to all he achieved," she said.

"My thoughts and sympathy go out to Lord Morris's friends and family while we remember his important work."

The book will be opened at Manchester Town Hall and remain in the building's foyer until 4 September.
