'Positive' reaction to Eisteddfod in Vale of Glamorgan
Published: 12th Aug 2012 11:26:37
The National Eisteddfod has ended in the Vale of Glamorgan with its chief executive confident the event is financially sustainable.
Elfed Roberts said the policy worked of reducing the size of the site, including the capacity of the pavilion, to save £250,000.
He welcomed a "positive" event with the attendance for the eight days 138,767.
This was lower than the 2011 event in Wrexham but higher than for Ebbw Vale in 2010.
The eight-day cultural festival, which was based at Llandow near Cowbridge, returned to the Vale after 44 years.
"My memories will be of an Eisteddfod that was positive, good humoured and enjoyable," said Mr Roberts.
"I've had the pleasure of talking with local people, and for some of them it's been an eye opener with some having had previously very little knowledge of the event. They've really enjoyed it.
"And that's the legacy we leave here, and we will build on it in the years to come."
He added that there had been concrete developments including a language centre in Barry.
Rob Thomas, Vale of Glamorgan's director of development services, said that local people had played their part.
He said that many local people had visited the Eisteddfod for the first time, but also the county had also managed to attract traditional eisteddfod-goers to the Vale for the first time.
"It's been a long time since the Eisteddfod was here last, but I hope it wont be as long before it's held again," he said.
The Eisteddfod is held in Denbighshire in 2013.
