Pollution clean-up after two fishing boats sink
Published: 11th Aug 2012 11:05:04
Pollution clean-up operations have taken place after two fishing boats sank in separate incidents.
The first happened off Skye when the "Nemesis", which was docked at Kyleakin Harbour, went down. There was no-one on board at the time.
Stornoway coastguard said a "couple of hundred" litres of light diesel escaped but there was little pollution and it had been contained.
In the second incident the "Angusina" went down in Cromwell Harbour, Dunbar.
East Lothian Council was taking steps to stop the spread of oil.
Fire crews and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency were also involved in the incident.
An RNLI spokesman said the Angusina appeared to have taken on water through ventilation outlets when it settled badly against the harbour wall.
"One of our volunteer crewmen and a fire officer boarded the vessel and with the aid of heavy pumping equipment managed to refloat it," the spokesman said.
"However the operation had to stop when quantities of fuel oil ended up in the harbour."
