One of Edinburgh's top restaurants is expected to close because of the economic downturn.

Staff at Oloroso, in the capital's New Town, were told by owner and chef Tony Singh on Wednesday that it faces closure in a few weeks.

The restaurant, with rooftop terrace views of the castle, opened in 2001 and won awards as a significant newcomer among the city's high end eateries.

Mr Singh said he was very proud of what Oloroso had achieved over 10 years.

"Running my own restaurant has been an unforgettable experience.

"However the current economic climate is incredibly challenging and in all honesty it has made me question my future, as well as the future of my staff and suppliers."

Mr Singh, who has worked for more than 20 years in Edinburgh restaurants, also ran Roti restaurant in Edinburgh's business district between 2005 and 2008.

He added: "I feel that it makes sense to take a step back from the industry during these difficult times and re-group."
