Gold post box to mark Andy Murray's Olympic medal win
Published: 6th Aug 2012 07:54:01
Andy Murray is to have a post box painted gold in his home town to honour his new status as an Olympic champion.
The 25-year-old beat Roger Federer on Sunday to become the first British man to win the Games' singles title since 1908.
He went on to take silver in the mixed doubles with Laura Robson.
Royal Mail is painting a post box in Dunblane, Perthshire, to mark his achievement. A special stamp featuring the tennis star has also been produced.
Murray beat the Swiss world number one in straight sets, 6-2 6-1 6-4, on a raucous Centre Court.
His triumph came four weeks to the day since he lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final.
Murray described his victory as "number one for me - the biggest win of my life".
He said he took inspiration from the crowd and from British success in the Olympic Stadium on Saturday night.
"They were unbelievable, it's not just here but all of the events I've watched," he said.
"I watched the athletics last night and it was amazing.
"The momentum I think the teams have from the last couple of days has been so good."
Royal Mail will be painting one of its red post boxes gold to celebrate every Team GB and ParalympicsGB gold medal win.
The boxes will remain in use and customers will be able to post mail in them as normal.
