Olympic ceremony performers enjoy UK sales boost
Published: 5th Aug 2012 19:08:53
Olympic games fever has spread to the UK record charts, with artists involved in the London 2012 opening ceremony seeing a corresponding boost in sales.
Mike Oldfield, Emeli Sande and Arctic Monkeys are among those to shift extra units following their appearances at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July.
At the top of the album chart, teenage pop star Conor Maynard claims number one with his debut record Contrast.
East London grime star Wiley tops the singles chart with his song Heatwave.
The Bow-born rapper secures the top spot ahead of fellow new entrants Calvin Harris and Example, who have to settle for second place with their collaboration We'll Be Coming Back.
Further down the singles chart, electronic duo Underworld narrowly miss out on a Top 10 spot with Olympic composition Caliban's Dream.
Featuring Alex Trimble of Two Door Cinema Club on vocals and featured in the opening ceremony, the seven-minute track charts at number 12.
Arctic Monkeys' cover of The Beatles' Come Together and folk singer Frank Turner's I Will Believe are ranked at 21 and 40 respectively.
The tracks - performed at opposite ends of the Olympic launch - had been ranked in last week's chart at 67 and 97.
In the album countdown, Sande sees her debut record Our Version of Events - already one of the biggest sellers of 2012 - jump five places from eight to three.
The Scottish singer performed a spine-tingling version of the hymn Abide With Me at the ceremony, which was watched by almost 27 million people in the UK at its peak.
Oldfield, who performed his classic Tubular Bells at the event, charts at number six with his best-of compilation Two Sides.
Another new entry in this week's album chart comes from Londoner Delilah - real name Paloma Stoecker - whose new record From the Roots Up makes its debut at five.
