Rower Tom James's gold post box and stamp honour
Published: 5th Aug 2012 11:47:34
Rower Tom James's first class rowing effort has led to a second post box in Wales being painted gold as well as a special Olympic stamp going on sale.
James, 28, who grew up in Coedpoeth, Wrexham won gold with his team mates in the mens' coxless four at London 2012.
Royal Mail is painting a post box in the home towns of British Olympic champions.
Wrexham's gold post box joins one in Cardiff in honour of cyclist Geraint Thomas who took first place on Friday.
On Saturday, James's was one of six gold medals to be won by British athletes including Jessica Ennis and Mo Farah.
And on Sunday morning, painters were beginning the task of redecorating the post box outside Townhill Post Office in Wrexham.
Both Tom James and Geraint Thomas also won at their events at the Beijing Olympics four years ago.
Special stamps have also been printed in honour of both athletes.
Those featuring Thomas are on sale for the normal first class price of 60p.
Stamps picturing James and his team mates will be on sale by lunch time on Sunday, in more than 500 Post Offices across the UK.
Royal Mail said it is the first time it has issued stamps on a Sunday.
Thomas, 26, was the first Welsh athlete to win gold medals in back-to-back Olympics since equestrian rider Richard Meade in 1968 and 1972.
That was followed a day later by James, 28, who defended his own Olympic crown on Saturday.
They are among only five Welsh athletes to have won more than one Olympic gold medal.
