Games Lanes causing 'confusion and controversy'

The cabbies demonstration came a day after the M4 Games Lane was introduced

The controversy around the Games Lanes shows little sign of disappearing.

Cabbies brought Whitehall to a standstill this afternoon with a protest against not being allowed in them.

Here's a TV piece I did on that and the confusion facing motorists. More protests are planned.

The Games Lanes in London do not get turned on for another week but some motorists are getting confused. Many in my newsroom admit they don't know if they can use them.

That shows you, contrary to previous evidence, these messages can get blurred and lost very easily.

The bottom line is, apart from the M4 bus lane and the Egham bypass, the other Games Lanes are not turned on until Wednesday, 25 July.

That means you can use them.

Also the mood around enforcement is not draconian. It seems there will be some leeway on fines if a genuine mistake has been made and you drive into them. On the M4 it seems there is very little policing at all.

Not many Londoners, though, will want to chance a £130 fine ...

So are they a necessary evil to get athletes and officials between venues, or elitist? Let me know.
