An Irish couple whose two-year-old son and unborn child were killed in a car crash on holiday in Devon remain in a critical condition in hospital.

The young victim, named locally as Oisin Twomey, died and his father Con, 39, and mother Elber, 38, were injured in the crash in Torquay on Friday.

Mr and Mrs Twomey remain in a "critical" condition in Derriford Hospital. Both have undergone surgery.

Medical staff operating on Mrs Twomey were unable to save the unborn baby.

The family, on holiday from Ireland, were driving along Hamelin Way in Torquay when the head-on crash happened at about 14:45 BST.

The male driver of the second car, who is believed to be a Polish national from Torquay, was arrested at the scene but later died.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said it appeared his black Vectra went down a hill and swerved into the path of the family's oncoming car.

The victims are yet to be formally identified by police.
