Up to 40mm of rain is expected along the east coast of Ireland on Friday evening

News of the downpour, equivalent to three weeks rain, comes as many Northern Ireland people are heading south on holidays or to catch flights.

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning and said the persistent rain could result in flooding in some places.
