Police have launched an investigation after a "suspicious" death in a Manchester park.

Officers were called to Birchfields Park, Rusholme, at about 13:00 BST on Tuesday, following reports that a man was unconscious.

The man, thought to be in his 50s, had suffered a facial injury, police said and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they did not yet know how the man came to be injured and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

He is described as being of heavy-build, bald, clean shaven and with olive skin. He was wearing a light blue shirt, grey flannels, grey socks and black shoes.

A post-mortem examination is due to take place later to establish the cause of death.

Det Insp Theresa Carter said: "We are treating this as suspicious as this stage due to the circumstances in which he was found.

"We are keeping an open mind and are appealing to anyone who may be able to account for this man's movements, so we can piece everything together and provide some much needed answers for the man's family."
