There are warnings of possible flooding in southern England and Wales with heavy rain forecast to continue.

The Environment Agency has issued flood alerts in 55 areas - 44 in south-east England. A number of roads are closed.

Seven flood warnings are in place; six for the South East, including parts of the River Mole on the Surrey/Sussex border, and one in the Anglia region.

The Met Office is warning of heavy rain in parts of Wales and the south-west, east and south-east of England.

It said this could lead to localised surface water flooding, particularly in west Wales, where the ground has been saturated by recent heavy rain.

There are no severe flood warnings - the highest alert.

BBC Weather's Chris Fawkes explains how the bad weather is because of the jet stream

Environment Agency Wales earlier said it did not expect further flooding, but that heavy rain could disrupt the clean-up operation from weekend flooding.

On Saturday about 1,000 people were moved to safety from flooding in mid-Wales, with an estimated 150 rescued.

On Monday, Wiggonholt in West Sussex received the entire average rainfall for June in 24 hours.

BBC Weather said there would be heavy showers, particularly in Wales and the South West on Tuesday. It warned showers in these areas would continue into Wednesday.

The Environment Agency has warned people to check its website for information on the latest situation. It "strongly" advised the public to stay away from swollen rivers and not to drive through floodwaters.

The weather is affecting roads in various parts of the country and the BBC's Travel Unit has full details of delays and incidents on its website:

Four people were rescued from their cars in two separate flood-related incidents in the Hampshire village of Southwick on Monday.

A man also had to be rescued by firefighters after his car became stuck in a flood in Waterlooville, Hampshire.

Flooding also prompted the diversion of emergency cases at Worthing Hospital, West Sussex, to neighbouring Brighton and Chichester for several hours overnight.

The Met Office said the UK was still below its average rainfall for the time of year.

Between January and May, 392.5mm of rain fell across the country, compared to an average of 439mm.
