Thousands take part in 10km run in London

More than 10,500 people have taken part in a 10km run through central London.

The Bupa London 10,000 run began at the Mall and runners went past Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, Leadenhall Market, St Paul's Cathedral and Buckingham Palace before finishing at the Mall.

British athlete Mo Farah, who grew up in west London, won the race with a time of 29 minutes 21 seconds.

Long distance runner Mara Yamauchi was the fastest woman and finished the course in 32 minutes and 52 seconds.

Farah, who was born in Somalia but came to the capital as a child, holds the course record of 27 minutes 44 seconds, which he set in 2010.

Following his win the athlete, who is now training for the London Olympics, said: "Olympics comes around only once in four years and to have it right at your doorstep where you grew up is very exciting."

Yamauchi said: "I can't believe in two months I'm going to be back here and I'll be in the Olympics".
