Man hurt as car hits pub smoking shelter in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire
Published: 12th May 2012 15:26:11
A man is in intensive care in a stable condition after a car hit a smoking shelter outside a pub in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire.
Witnesses say Peter Brown, 59, from Laugharne, was hit after a car reversed into the shelter outside the Cross House pub at 20:00 BST on Friday.
Local people at the scene lifted the car off Mr Brown, who was trapped.
The female driver of the car is also being treated at West Wales General Hospital in Carmarthen.
Both Mr Brown, who delivers coal, and the woman were treated at the scene by paramedics, before being taken to hospital.
Mr Brown's son, Martyn, has thanked local people who helped his father following the incident.
Howard Cessford, from Laugharne, described what happened.
He said Mr Brown, himself and another man were smoking in the shelter when a car reversed into the shelter.
Mr Cessford and the other man managed to run clear of the shelter before it was hit, he said.
"The car just came back and smashed the place up.
"As we were running, we turned and saw Peter was under the car and all the glass and timbers... it was very scary."
Mr Cessford said people drinking inside the pub and the rugby club opposite ran out to help.
"Our main concern was that we got the car off Peter - it was just panic.
"Everyone came running to help lift the car off him," he said.
Cerys Harry, who was working behind the the bar at the Cross House, said: "There was a loud bang outside the window and when I looked the shelter was covering the window.
"Someone shouted dial 999 and then they asked for everyone to come out and help move the car.
"I went out and they I saw the car was on top of Peter.
"The men came running out and with the adrenaline, I suppose, they just moved the car."
Mr Brown is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.
