Water supplies have been restored to about 500 properties in Fife after a mains pipe was damaged by contractors.

Scottish Water said its engineers had managed to keep water flowing to the affected homes and businesses throughout most of Monday.

But the supply was shut off in the Garvock Hill area of Dunfermline on Monday night while repairs were carried out.

Customers have been warned that water may be discoloured initially.

Scottish Water has advised that kitchen taps should be run until water runs clear.

Anne Marie Dewar, Scottish Water's regional community manager for the area, said: "Our dedicated engineers have been working through the night to carry out this essential pipeline repair.

"In order for our engineers to fix the water main as quickly and safely as possible it was critical that they switch off the water supply serving around 500 properties in the Garvock Hill area of the town.

"Using their expert knowledge of this complicated system of pipes, they diverted supplies in order to keep disruption to an absolute minimum with all customers back in supply again this morning."
