'Firearms found' in major police search operation in Bearsden
Published: 13th Apr 2012 07:54:58
Firearms may have been found by police carrying out a major operation to the north of Glasgow, BBC Scotland understands.
At least two dozen officers, including a forensic team, are searching a former farm building and nearby wooded areas in the Killermont area of Bearsden.
One local resident told BBC Scotland a group of men in their 30s and 40s had been living there.
A number of items wrapped in plastic were seen being removed.
Strathclyde Police said it was making no comment at this stage, but no one has yet been arrested or charged.
Mary Donaldson, who lives in a neighbouring house, told BBC Scotland how she returned home at 21:00 on Thursday to find police tape had been put up as officers began the search.
She said: "I asked what was happening and they said there was an incident at the farm. We never, ever see any kind of incidents like that here or the number of police, which makes me think it must be something pretty serious.
"There was a lot of forensic policemen."
Mrs Donaldson said people regularly came and went from the farm building, which was known locally as Heartbreak House because young men would go to stay there whent they split up with their partners.
She added: "It was a working farm but it's not any more. Maybe about five or six years ago it was rented out to young people. There's a lot of young men live there.
"They keep themselves to themselves because they're quite isolated over there. I just know one guy there is a taxi driver.
"They do have parties but certainly don't cause any problems. They randomly burn things - I've never known a place to have so many bonfires."
