Ryde Castle Hotel collapses after fire breaks out

A hotel on the Isle of Wight has partially collapsed after fire broke out on Saturday night.

The Ryde Castle Hotel, in Ryde, was evacuated and six fire crews called to the scene just after 22:00 GMT.

Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters were withdrawn from the building just before the collapse and that they were still at the scene.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire, which is ongoing, is under investigation.

A fire service spokesman said they had initially responded to reports that the roof of the hotel was on fire and that the flames had then spread to the top part of the building.

He said police had been informed there was a fireworks display at the hotel about two hours before they were called to the fire, but the cause of the blaze was not yet known.

The 18-bedroom hotel overlooks Ryde Esplanade and Harbour.
