A man has been arrested after a woman was found seriously injured on a railway line in East Sussex.

Sussex Police said the woman was discovered lying on tracks near Linton Road, Hastings, at about 0355 GMT on Sunday.

She has been taken to Conquest Hospital at Hastings with serious head injuries.

The force said a man had been arrested on suspicion of assault. The railway line has been closed between West St Leonards and Ore.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "This enquiry is at an early stage and we are making detailed enquiries to establish exactly what has happened. We are not in position to release further information at this time.

"There will clearly be some disruption for intending rail travellers on the route across Hastings for the time being, and we ask people to be patient and to contact rail travel information if they need further information on alterations to the timetable.

"We hope to enable that stretch of line to re-open as soon as possible but cannot at present say when that will be."

The force said it was working with the British Transport Police (BTP) and Southern Railway over the investigation.
