Country singer Carl Smith dies at 82

Country singer Carl Smith, the former husband of June Carter Cash, has died at the age of 82 at home in Tennessee.

Smith had 41 chart singles in the 1950s including Are You Teasing Me?, Hey Joe! and Back Up Buddy.

Smith married Carter in 1952, a fellow member of the Grand Ole Opry, a weekly country radio programme. They had one child, singer Carlene Carter.

After divorcing in 1956, Smith left the Grand Old Opry. He married singer Goldie Hill the following year.

Hall of fame

Smith turned to acting and appeared in two westerns, The Badge of Marshal Brennan and Buffalo Gun.

Between 1964 and 1969, he hosted nearly 200 episodes of Carl Smith's Country Music Hall on Canadian television.

Smith was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003, having retired from singing in 1978.

His wife Goldie died in 2005.
