Students protesting against raising tuition fees and budget cuts are staging an occupation in a university building in London.

The occupation at the School of Oriental and African Studies is taking place ahead of a day of student protests on Wednesday.

Students are protesting against plans to raise fees in England to £9,000 per year and to cut university budgets.

MPs will vote on the higher education plans before Christmas.

It is believed that about 50 students are taking part in the occupation of a gallery area in the central London university.

A wave of student protests and occupations are expected across the country this week.

A march against the proposed fee increase two weeks ago ended with an attack on the Millbank office block where the Conservative party is based.
